How AI is Transforming Business: A Conversation with Jonathan Mast

Have You Ever Wished You Had More Time?

Do you feel overwhelmed by your to-do list? Are you curious about how AI could help your business but not sure where to start?

AI is changing how we work, and it's not just for tech experts. In fact, it might be most valuable for experienced professionals who know their field well.

In this article, we share insights from Jonathan Mast, a generative AI expert who built a thriving Facebook community of over 287,000 members focused on using AI to save time and create new opportunities.

Who Is Jonathan Mast?

Jonathan describes himself as "a 55-year-old guy with ADD who discovered AI" and had his mind blown in a positive way. After 15 years in digital marketing, he recognized that AI would be a game changer, especially for seasoned professionals.

In May 2023, he started a Facebook group called "AI Prompts for Entrepreneurs." What began as a small community exploded to nearly 290,000 members in just over a year.

"We started it in May of 2023, and literally I was sitting out in the middle of nowhere camping and thought 'I have nothing to do today, let's start a Facebook group, let's have fun,'" Jonathan explains.

Why AI Benefits Experienced Professionals Most

One of the most interesting insights Jonathan shares is how AI uniquely benefits people with more experience:

"I believe in my core that AI amplifies skill and experience, and so probably for the first time in history, we have a brand new technology that actually benefits us when we're older."

Unlike many technologies that favor younger users, AI works best when guided by deep domain expertise. Jonathan compares it to a hammer:

"It's like a hammer in the hands of a carpenter. If I pick up a hammer, I'm likely going to break something with it... but if you put that hammer in the hands of a craftsman, they can make amazing things."

Your knowledge becomes the secret ingredient that makes AI truly powerful.

How AI Transforms the Lives of Entrepreneurs

For entrepreneurs, especially those with ADD tendencies, Jonathan has seen AI make a huge difference. The biggest transformation? Getting more done in less time.

"We used to have a long list of ideas for holidays... most of it never got done," he explains. "Now I can have an idea and execute on it in 10-20 minutes."

Speed to implementation is where AI shines. As Jonathan puts it: "Money and success love speed, not always perfection, and AI allows us to amplify that."

The Surprising Group Embracing AI

While Jonathan expected entrepreneurs to join his community, he was surprised by retired business professionals also jumping on board.

"The part that surprised me the most is the number of retired business people in the group," he shares. "We had four people on a call recently that were over 75 years old."

These retirees are using their wisdom and experience, amplified by AI, to create new opportunities and continue to contribute meaningfully.

The Key to Using AI Effectively: Good Prompting

Jonathan emphasizes that the most important skill in using AI is knowing how to communicate with it effectively.

He teaches a simple four-step prompting framework:

  1. Tell the AI what type of expert it should be

  2. Provide context about what you're doing

  3. Ask your specific question

  4. End with "Ask me any questions you have"

This last step is crucial and often overlooked. It creates a feedback loop where AI asks for clarification, leading to better results.

As Jonathan explains: "AI has been programmed to make assumptions... If you tell it to ask clarifying questions, it does a much better job."

Finding Business Opportunities with AI

Jonathan offers key advice: start with the problem, not the technology.

"Find a problem that somebody with money is willing to pay you to fix," he says. "Only after you do that, use AI to make the process more efficient."

Too many people approach it backwards. AI is a tool, not the solution itself: "AI isn't the magic wand. AI is the rocket engine we put on the car to go faster. It's not the car itself."

If you know your domain well, you already know what needs to be fixed. AI just helps you fix it faster.

How to Introduce AI to Skeptical Colleagues or Bosses

If you're excited about AI but meet resistance, focus on value, not the tech.

"If I go geeky about how excited I am about AI, their eyes will glaze over," Jonathan says. "But if I say, 'I found a way that could add five hours a week with a little training,' most bosses say 'Great.'"

Outcomes over jargon is the way to win support.

Real-World Results: 80% Time Savings

Jonathan shared how an accounting firm initially set a goal for 50% time savings using AI. Based on testing, they're now expecting closer to 80% savings.

Jonathan often starts small: "If I could show you a 10-15% improvement, what would that mean?"

Then the results exceed expectations.

Looking Ahead: Automation in 2025

Jonathan predicts that 2025 will be the year of automation—connecting AI with workflow tools like Make and Zapier.

"I can have AI do something for me, then take that result and move it to another app or process," he shares.

Digital marketing agencies are already automating post creation from blog content using AI.

However, he warns against overhyping autonomous agents: "Somebody had to tell it what to do to start."

Addressing Security Concerns

Security often comes up in AI discussions. Jonathan views it from a risk-reward perspective.

"Using AI has risks, but the rewards are incredible," he says. "Like driving to the grocery store: there's a risk, but you still go because the reward is food."

Reasonable precautions make the benefits of AI implementation worth it.
